Everyone depended on Cron. It's not that he minded - exactly. He was used to it. It was how it always was. Everyone just took it for granted that he would always be there, quietly making sure all of the required tasks were taken care of. It was the kind of thankless certainty that gave everyone an air of confidence, knowing Cron would always take care of things. No one ever considered that he might stop; that he might get sick or just not function as he should. Others failed from time to time. But not Cron. That was a luxury in which he never indulged.

That was about to change.

There were, of course, others like him. Others in that same elite circle who always were there when they were needed. And they all had their specialties. None by themselves were indispensible. But working together, as they did so well, they became invaluable. But no one ever imagined that this team would ever fail to serve them or fail to fulfill their needs.

But that was about to change.
